Ichigo Ichie

Since my high school days, when I was around 13-16, I've always liked the Japanese word 'Ichigo'.

The liking started because of my love for strawberries and also because of this guy I had a crush on, hahahaha. That guy used to like Ichigo from Bleach (see image below).

Anyway, I continued using 'Ichigo' as part of my daily life, for example, email addresses or online usernames, and I recently found a really nice Japanese phrase:

Ichigo Ichie

一期一会 "one time, one meeting"

From an online essay (article):

This phrase has taught me to cherish each encounter, for “Ichigo Ichie” literally translates to “One encounter, one chance”—meaning every encounter with someone, even a friend whom you see often, should be treated as if it were a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence. It truly embodies how delicate and fragile life is, for every encounter and departure is a chance occurrence for this time only, never again to be repeated—one chance in a lifetime.

The philosophy behind it is that one should always do one’s best when meeting someone, treasuring each encounter as a once-in-a-lifetime event, even if it is a friend whom one sees often.

Nice article, worth reading.

Ichigo Ichie.

Live in the moment.
